When we were purchased by IBM (admittedly it's been a while), our separate HR, finance, IT and legal groups were gone before we knew it. Engineering got integrated over the first year (when I left), but with a pretty light touch, and AFAIK took into the second year to complete. Apparently things got increasingly more "IBM-ified" over the years, but a suprising number of the core folks have stayed, so it can't be all misery. Maybe RH won't be completely crushed.

So what exactly is happening to the software industry? Why are we getting buggier than ever releases of major Operating Systems?

For some reasons I can’t stop thinking about “AI”.

Yes, it's easy. The thing people are missing (especially those believing AI is a "dead end" and "not transformative") is that the field has been advancing so fast in the past few years, that there's lots of such unexplored avenues, unpicked low-hanging fruits, that everyone just raced past. We've barely begun exploring the capabilities ML brought us - patterns, applications, and architectures.

Now that we're hitting against the hardware supply limits of global economy, I expect more people to go back and revisit the things left along the way in the mad rush to "just throw more compute at it / make a bigger model" - and thus many more cases like Jev to show up in the next few years.

Object store is quickly becoming the new core data substrate. Lets build kafka, but on s3. Lets build github, but on s3. It feels like we going to see more and more "object-store first" systems in the next few years.

I am excited about this future. Give me stateless servers and a storage bucket over having to manage systems with disks any day.

I do wonder if we will see an expansion of the s3 api to support more of these use cases. S3 added a janky file append operation to their new express-one-zone bucket type, and limited to 10k total file append operations. I wonder what else we will get in the next few years.

Micron is a trillion dollar company. The CEO would never say something like that directly. He's talking in the "business dialect" of English and you have to read between the lines a bit.

The problem with "engineers will review" is: Critical review requires expertise. Expertise requires experience. Experience comes from building. Builders build because they like to build. So when builders are asked to do nothing but review, they will eventually tire of their jobs and leave, sometimes not just the job, but the industry entirely. The lower the quality of the agents' output, the faster this will happen.

My pet theory with this move from Chromebooks to Googlebooks is simply that Chromebooks have a major stink on their entire brand reputation, especially in the younger generation that went through school with terrible cheap (and likely used/damaged) Chromebooks being given to them for schoolwork.

I think if you say "Chromebook" around most 20-something and unders, they have an instant negative association with the word.

"It has always been this way, this is normal" is the typical first response to tyranny. It puts you on their side, which is fine if that's where you want to be. Just be aware of it. If you think it's wrong, you definitely don't want to be taking the side of "it's normal," because whether or not it's normal is irrelevant when your government is doing immoral and tyrannical behavior in your name.

Rewriting the commit author is very much "stolen".

If Ramanujan could freely disclose and publish results that were arrived at by literal divine inspiration (he certainly didn't bother to write down "proofs" in the modern sense!) why do we suddenly need all this "responsible release" process stuff when it comes to AI-derived results? This makes no sense when compared with existing norms within the mathematical community.

This is the challenge. The market in the US, the salaries, etc. are significantly better/higher, but the quality of life is often worse.

Most people who claim to be against big government are really just opposed to the idea of the government restricting them, personally. If it's their friends wielding government to hunt and punish the right people then they're in support. You could see this well before the current turn, recall the overlap between small government support and pro-police, pro-military, pro-death penalty, pro-stop and frisk "law and order" types.
